WHO SHOULD CERTIFY?
A global chief information officer is the company executive responsible for the management, implementation, and usability of information and computer technologies. Because technology is increasing and reshaping industries globally, the role of the GCIO has increased in popularity and importance. The GCIO analyzes how various technologies benefit the company or improve an existing business process and then integrates a system to realize that benefit or improvement.
Global Information Technology Managers are responsible for managing the IT operations for an organization. Their duties include liaising with external and internal service providers to provide customized technical solutions, develop technological capacity in IT personnel and systems, and manage acquisition, deployment, and destruction of IT assets. They are responsible for creating an IT plan, act as a technical advisor, and manage software and hardware procurement. Global Information Technology Managers prepare IT performance reports, assist in IT internal audits, develop IT policies, review documentation, and facilitate staff training.
DESIGNATIONS & REQUIREMENTS
Candidates must have worked in a full-time, paid role. Paid intern, co-op or any other course work cannot be applied toward the work experience requirement.
- Certified Global Chief Information Officer (GCIO) for Senior Executives with 8+ years’ senior management experience in the information technology with 12+ Years of on-the-job experience must be in a “Decision-making” position*. Professional Certification comes with the right to be called a Certified GCIO and use the post nominal GCIO.
- Certified Global Information Technology Managers (GITM) for 10+ years of on-the-job experience in the areas of IT with 5+ Years of on-the-job experience must be in a “Decision-making” position*. Professional Certification comes with the right to be called a Certified GITM and use the post nominal GITM.
- Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science or a related field, or
- Master in Information Technology or MBA with a focus in a subject like information technology management
*A “Decision-making” position is defined as the authority to define, execute, or control projects/processes and to be responsible for the outcome. This may or may not include management or supervisory positions.
BODY OF KNOWLEDGE
The topics in this new BOK include descriptive details (subtext) that will be used by the Exam Development Committee as guidelines for writing test questions. This subtext is also designed to help candidates prepare for the exam by identifying specific content within each topic that may be tested.
The subtext is not intended to limit the subject matter or be all-inclusive of what might be covered in an exam but is intended to clarify how the topics relate to a manager’s role. The descriptor in parentheses at the end of each entry refers to the maximum cognitive level at which the topic will be tested. A complete description of cognitive levels is provided at the end of the document.
EXAMINATION
Each certification candidate is required to pass an examination that consists of multiple-choice questions that measure comprehension of the Body of Knowledge.
Computer Delivered – The examination is a one-part, 180- multiple choice question exam, and is offered in English only. 165 questions are scored and 15 are unscored. Total appointment time is four-and-a-half-hours, exam time is 4 hours and 18 minutes.
Paper and Pencil – The examination is a one-part, 165- multiple choice question, four-hour exam and is offered in English.
All examinations are open book. Each participant must bring his or her own reference materials.
